We think it's very important that parents know what they can do to give help and support to their child with IBS. That's why we've put together a couple of factsheets for parents to learn more about IBS and how it can affect school life.

It can be hard to cope with IBS at School, it's difficult to hide the condition from others and sometimes you can be teased. The best way to cope with IBS at school is tell your friends about what you're going through to help them better understand the condition and not tease you in future. Make sure your teachers know that you have IBS and let them know that sometimes you'll desperately need the toilet or to see the School nurse to get your medication.
If you need to spend a long time away from school because of your IBS, ask your teachers to send your work home so you don't get behind everyone else in your class. It may also be a good idea to keep in contact with a friend or two from school if you're off school. That way you'll be able to keep up to date with what's going on from day to day.
No matter what's going on, remember to keep your spirits up. When you go back to school it can be hard at first, so find ways to set yourself goals and give yourself a reward when you complete a full school day.
